Geography / Geology
Apison Tennessee is situated within the convergence of two distinct physiographic provinces: The Valley and Ridge to the east and the Cumberland Plateau to the west. The Valley and Ridge region is characterized by alternating long ridges and valleys oriented in a northeast-southwest direction. The underlying bedrock outcrops bear witness to geological forces, folding, and fracturing during the late Paleozoic era. On the other hand, the Cumberland Plateau, forming the western edge of the Appalachian Mountains, features a series of high plains and valleys with fewer fold and faults compared to the Valley and Ridge. London Woods lies on the boundary between these two geologic provinces.
